Dr. Kaye E
Burnside
Dr. Kaye E. Burnside has served as the Superintendent of Compton Unified School District for two years. Prior to that she was in West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD), and served as Regional Superintendent, Chief Academic Officer, and Deputy Superintendent. Additionally, Dr. Burnside served as State External Evaluator for school program reform and participated on a technical panel for the Grants and Program Development Institute. She also served on the Proposition 10 Commission for First Five for the Contra Costa County.
During her time in WCCUSD, Dr. Burnside worked as a teacher and project assistant. In 1992 she was named principal of WCCUSD’s Washington Elementary School where she was hailed as “a miracle worker” for bringing the school back from the brink of closure due to a lack of leadership and declining enrollment. Under her guidance the school’s enrollment more than doubled, from 150 to 354 students, with a waiting list, and test scores rose by 75 percent. For that accomplishment, Dr. Burnside received a grant to write her story of how she turned the school around.
Prior to joining West Contra Costa, Dr. Burnside worked for 10 years on a project for the U. S. Department of Education. During this time she worked in school districts in 9 western states, Guam, and American Samoa. In 1999 she received the Woman of the Year Education Award from the State of California and Administrator of the Year for the West Contra Costa Unified School District.
Dr. Burnside is a member of the California Association of African American Educators (CAAAE), the California Association of African American Superintendents and Administrators (CAAASA), and the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA). She serves on ACSA’s Superintendent’s Council for Region XIV Superintendents and the California School Boards Association Superintendent’s Advisory Council.
